Job Title OPR 2970 Electrical System Engineer

Position Purpose The Staff Engineer, Electrical reports to the Engineering Leader and is responsible for providing a moderate to high level of product design, mentoring to other Engineers and participation in process improvements, strategic planning and presentations. This position works under a low level of supervision with a high level of independent work. The Staff Engineer provides awareness and understanding of overall project portfolio, interactions and issues. This position has a high level of industry/Customer contact and industry awareness. In addition, this position participates in enterprise negotiation and provides technical evaluation of new opportunities within the PLC process.


Essential Functions
  • Plans, schedules and coordinates detailed phases of a major project or in a total project system of moderate scope.
  • May carry out complex or novel research assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
  • Promotes and implements process improvements company-wide. May write product standard design guidelines.
  • Performs work that involves conventional engineering practices, but includes a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Provides direct support of sales, manufacturing, purchasing and development by sharing information in the form of major/complex proposals and design reviews.
  • Independently troubleshoots/analyzes system problems.
  • Independently writes and performs complex component tests.
  • Sets technical direction on complex projects and problem solving guidance?to Level 1-3 Engineers and Technicians.
  • Ensures designs meet manufacturability, testability and reliability criteria.
  • Design, support and/or test moderate to high complexity hardware boards and systems.
  • May be the Technical Lead of international and multi-site projects.


Other Functions May perform the following functions:
  • Enhanced support of operations, customers and sales in process and product related issues.
  • Layout of high complex hardware boards.
  • Expert knowledge of Aircraft software and system engineering processes along with Aircraft standards such as RTCA DO-160, 178, 254, MIL-STD-810, MIL-E-5007, ARDs 4754, 4761 and 5757.
  • Technical Lead of a small team of engineers and technicians.
  • Provide input to MAP and planning processes.


Qualifications
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations, (Customer, internal and management). Writes and communicates critical reports. Leads complex design reviews, internally and Customer. Expert technical writing skills (procedures, reports, etc.)
  • Competent complex problem solving/troubleshooting skills for both components and subsystems.
  • Competent in the use of PCs and associated software.
  • Solid knowledge of appropriate WISE applications such as BOM, Item Master, NCR, Warranty, EC screens and part tracking.
  • Working knowledge of standards and the ability to apply complex groupings of standards into designs. Ability to quickly learn, interpret and apply new standards.
  • Competent use and application of design tools; solid use of DFSS tools and methodologies; solid knowledge of Engineering quality systems (PLC, Engineering change, configuration management). Ability to run existing standard tools (e.g. layout tools, circuit analysis, dynamic simulation, etc.).
  • Significant contributor to the design of complex products/systems.
  • Complete understanding of component functions and testing requirements. Understands manufacturing processes, drawings and standards.
  • Ability to strategically prioritize based on business needs.
  • May have company-recognized expertise. May represent Woodward at conferences and industrial events.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills; ability to drive results across organizational boundaries.
  • Expert knowledge in one or more specialized fields or product families or a high level of generalized knowledge.


Education/Training BS degree in Engineering required. Post-graduate technical degree desired.

Experience Greater than 8 years in related field required, including post-graduate experience.
