SmartFire 12 Cylinder Racing Ignition
The SmartFire system can be used for great benefit on racing engines. This technology provides an improvement in horsepower just from the high-energy spark and retarded ignition timing. It can also be used for dramatic increases in horsepower by individually tuning each cylinder for maximum power Air/Fuel Ratio.
The SmartFire system provides individual control of timing for each cylinder of an engine. It can run any size engine up to 12 cylinders. It can run a 12-cylinder engine up to 15 000 rpm and the 10-cyliner engine up to 18 000 rpm. The combustion feedback from Ionization can be used for setting accurate ignition timing for each cylinder, it can also be used to provide feedback to the ECU. The ECU together with the ignition can tune the engine very quickly for maximum power Air/Fuel Ratio on each individual cylinder. This is done through a CAN Bus connection that needs to be developed with each ECU manufacturer. The system today provides Knock and Misfire Detection displayed to the Dyno operator. Knock Detection is critical for most racing applications in order to get power and reliability.
The system is designed to adapt to just about any racing engine whether it follows the ECU for ignition timing or whether it provides ignition timing on its own. It will work on carburated engines where the ignition itself which takes care of all timing, Knock Detection, Knock Retard, functions within the ignition itself. The WinFire Software provides the engine tuner with critical information, so that while Dynoing the engine the operator can see if there is a problem on an individual cylinder or whether the ignition timing has been advanced too far for all cylinders. The instrumentation software is key to the engineer developing the engine allowing the engineer to be able to see what is happening inside the combustion chamber of each cylinder individually. The software allows the ignition to be reconfigured from the PC for a different firing order or different number of cylinders for different engines that are to be tested on your dynamometer.
The SmartFire system can provide greater horsepower for racing engines for four separate reasons: better ignition, and stabilizing faster light off to combustion allowing for retarded timing. Second the combustion feedback allows individual cylinder ignition timing to be programmed into the ignition itself. Third the combustion feedback provides critical information to allow the operator or ultimately the ECU to tune the Air/Fuel Ratio for each cylinder individually at a very rapid rate and without the need for cylinder pressure sensors in each cylinder to get this information. Fourth, the Knock Detection itself provides the most dramatic ability to advance the timing to the limit of the engine without the fear of damaging the engine, provided the SmartFire system is used in the racecar itself. The SmartFire system would then automatically retard the timing of individual cylinders automatically to prevent any damage from Knock or detonation in the racecar on the track.
