What began in years past with naval ships shutting down coal-fired boilers as they stayed in harbors, is applied these days to merchant ships as well. The main engines can be switched off during the harbor stay, which results in the reduction of noise and exhaust gas emissions to benefit those living nearby.

Woodward designs and delivers Frequency Converter Control Systems for Marine Applications. Since most of the ships run a 60 Hz grid, the shore connection has to fit the contemporary standard on board. Nowadays the conversion is also realized on the basis of semiconductor technology, another Woodward core competence.
