Woodward provides systems that protect generators from overvoltage that can arise between the earth and the electrical system. Unbalanced load in delta-connected generators can lead to a floating virtual star point (or neutral) that, at plant side, must connect to a fixed electrical potential. This ensures that all generators running in parallel have an identical reference point, and the form of the voltage supplied to the network complies with required grid standards.

There are various methods by which earthing can be accomplished, including via resistors that are used as a means of applying impedance between neutral and earth.
