Shaft Generator (Marine)
Woodward provides back-up solutions for Marine Engine Failure
Woodward provides the system that ensures safe maneuverability in the event of engine failure with a Shaft Generator Control. As recommended by the IMO (International Maritime Organization), new ships should be equipped with back-up systems.
With Shaft Generation Control, the main diesel is coupled with a gear box and clutch to supply power from the shaft with an electric drive that acts as a generator. If the main diesel fails, the crank shaft disconnects from the propulsion shaft, then the clutch, and is powered by the electric drive. Power for the electrical auxiliary drive can be generated by existing generator sets or other appropriate energy storages.
