Woodward Introduces Gas Metering System for Distributed Generation

Offers high-accuracy gas fuel metering for mini-turbines and fuel cells

Rockford, Ill., December 11, 2001—Woodward Governor Company (Nasdaq: WGOV) announced the delivery of the first Swift Gas Metering System (GMS) to an unidentified customer. Developed by Woodward's Industrial Controls business, the Swift GMS provides high-accuracy metering for gas turbines from 50 to 1000 kW, as well as high-pressure stationary fuel cells. The system was developed with a design-to-cost approach that focused on the requirements of the emerging distributed generation market.

Swift Dual Metering Valve The system is available in two primary configurations. The "Swift" configuration provides either single- or dual-metering valves in a single housing. This configuration can be integrated into a new or existing gas metering system to provide low cost, accurate, reliable control. The "Swift-Plus" configuration adds dual high-speed shutoff valves, temperature sensing, pressure sensing, a vent valve and a pilot flow option integrated into the single, compact package. The Swift-Plus system has been designed to provide system accuracy of 2% of point across the entire flow and temperature range.

The Swift GMS was also designed to reduce OEM's system costs. By integrating the entire fuel delivery system into a common manifold, the cost of assembly, inventory, harnesses and plumbing are significantly reduced. In addition, the system is fully tested at Woodward to confirm performance and operation prior to shipment.

"We are excited about the introduction of the Swift GMS to meet the requirements of our Distributed Generation OEM customers," said John Emery, Woodward's product manager for distributed generation control systems. "We have seen an extremely strong interest from both microturbine and fuel cell customers. During the first quarter of next year we expect to deliver initial pre-production units to more than six OEMs, which will give us a solid foundation in this market."

Initial shipment of pre-production units is expected to continue through the second quarter of 2002. UL and CE certifications for hazardous locations are expected with the final production release planned for August 2002.
