Woodward is taking a proactive approach to redesigning traditional fuel systems for use in pure hydrogen environments. One key challenge is hydrogen embrittlement, when certain metals become brittle and crack when exposed to hydrogen. In partnership with industrial and aerospace OEMs, universities, external research labs and materials experts, Woodward is preparing a detailed roadmap aimed at addressing hydrogen embrittlement in the re-designing of traditional fuel systems for use in pure hydrogen environments. This important work spans both industrial and aerospace and focuses on the selection of optimal metals and sealing materials along with research on metals processing (e.g. heat treatments and annealing) to ensure our designs perform consistently and meet rigorous quality standards. In addition, Woodward’s future products will be designed with quantifiable safety factors, which will be critical for future hydrogen powered, zero emissions aircraft.
