FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY

Woodward’s side stick designs can be implemented on aircraft for pitch and roll control, and on rotorcraft for cyclic control and auxiliary control. We also provide yoke, or center stick, controller systems, complete with mechanical linkages that maintain line-replaceable unit (LRU) flexibility.

The foundation of Woodward’s passive side stick is a patented centering device. This device reduces part count and simplifies operation, while providing a fully customizable compound-force profile. Woodward passive side sticks feature:

Life tested over 6 million cycles per axis
Brushless RVDTs/LVDTs for position sensing
Minimum size and weight

Woodward’s hybrid side stick controllers, or Smart Sticks, offer the key benefits of fully active sticks at an affordable price. Our Smart Sticks contain active control drives to simulate a cross-coupled mechanical connection between two side sticks. We simulate feel characteristics using traditional centering mechanisms.

Woodward’s center stick system allows the pilot and copilot controls to track each other mechanically, while maintaining LRU flexibility and fly-by-wire functionality. This design includes autopilot lock-out functionality and pilot/copilot disconnect, combined with customizable force profiles.
