Woodward designs and manufactures brakes and clutches for aerospace and defense motion-control applications. These highly-reliable accessory devices are produced in-house and augment Woodward’s motor and actuation products.
Size & Capacity
Woodward offers brakes in both round and square frames in popular inch-series diameter codes from Size 8 to Size 50 (.8” to 5.0”), commensurate with many of our standard motor diameters. The available torque capacity extends into the hundreds of inch-pounds using both toothed and plain friction-type disc designs. Woodward designs can be rated for both dynamic- or static-only engagement. Many of these devices are offered with either power-OFF or power-ON to engage, and with manual-release mechanisms, upon request.
Winding Options & Packaging
Most brake designs can be wound for 28VDC or less, and up to hundreds of volts. AC-powered designs are also available with or without built-in rectification. Woodward brakes are primarily open-framed, but they can also be simply housed to limit contamination, or completely housed into vehicle-level line-replaceable units (LRUs).
Hysteresis Torque Devices
Woodward also designs and manufactures magnetic hysteresis torque devices that are completely mechanical wear-free. We have effectively used these devices for applications such as holding brakes (anti-creep), torque limiters, and magnetic couplings.
Accessories
Commonly supplied accessory devices include Woodward’s own gearheads as may be desired to greatly amplify the braking torque produced within the specified volume allowance.
